Memoirs from the frontline: Poems of War, Memory, Becoming and Homecoming Amazon UK & US OUT NOW
Memoirs From The Frontline is the debut book by John Williams, a former Royal Marine who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, the jungle, and the Arctic. This hybrid memoir blends war writing, veteran experience, trauma recovery, fatherhood, and poetic reflection to explore the emotional realities of modern conflict and the long road home.
Written in a unique mix of memoir and poetry, Memoirs From The Frontline offers a raw and lyrical account of PTSD, identity, and the unseen battles carried long after service. The book speaks to veterans, military families, and readers interested in modern warfare, mental health, and personal transformation.
John Williams lives in the Cotswolds with his wife and continues to write and reflect, giving voice to the quiet truths of memory, healing, and becoming. His three children remain a central part of his life and journey.

“They said the odds were one in five…”
March 2003. Packed inside the deafening, vibrating fuselage of a CH‑47 Chinook helicopter, heading straight into the largest helicopter assault in modern history.
Look at the faces of the 40 Commando MSG lads in this photograph. We were young. Hyper‑focused. Stepping into something completely irreversible.
Standard history can map the dates and tactical coordinates of a campaign — but it rarely captures the heavy, silent weight running through a soldier’s bones minutes before the ramp drops.
I wrote Rotor Wash Baptism to give a voice to that exact silence.
It’s one of the foundational pieces in my upcoming hybrid memoir, Memoirs from the frontline, launching in physical paperback already available in the US and available this Friday, 11th September in the UK.
Rotor Wash Baptism
At twenty-two, with spine of steel,
I stood where few would ever kneel—
the spearhead of a storm begun,
the green devil rising, the silence undone.
They said the odds were one in five,
but we were forged in darker lives:
in shell scrapes deep, in nights that bled,
in rotor wash above our heads.
The SEALs would strike, then we descend,
to guard the oil, the Gulf, the end.
Each step rehearsed, each motion cast,
fate’s tight thread pulled taut at last.
Bergens groaned—a two-man weight,
our backs a chorus, boots in state.
Chinooks roared through desert drift,
Shemagh tight, goggles sealed and swift.
The heat, the fuel, the turbine’s breath,
the scent of war, the whisper of death.
We lifted into odds and night,
vanished beyond the edge of sight.
Up the ramp of Valhalla’s gate,
our Trojan horse, our burdened fate.
Nothing will break, nothing relent—
together we rose, together we went.
No plan survives first contact’s flame,
yet shield walls hold when brothers remain.
We rose not seeking praise or fame,
but mission, memory, and the name.

Memoirs from the Frontline: journey in images
My journey has never been a straight line. It moved through mud, fog, fire, silence, and the long road home. These images capture fragments of that path — moments of conflict, moments of isolation, and moments where memory feels sharper than reality. They are not photographs of war, but echoes of it, recreated and re-imagined: the boots that carried me, the helicopters that lifted us, the forests that hid my thoughts, and the quiet places where recovery finally began. This board is a visual companion to the book — a reminder that every story has a landscape, and every landscape leaves its mark.
